A friend of mine installed a head unit in an '01 Silverado. It had a pioneer unit in it that died, so he replaced it with a Kenwood KDC-917 I had laying around.. Here is what he did wrong, and the result..

Apparently he hooked up the DIMMER wire from the factory side harness to the illumination on the deck... which technically shouldn't have caused a problem...

anyways, now the auto headlights won't work, and the daytime running lights dont work either... All fuses and relays have been checked and work.

any suggestions?

without a harness adapter..... dimmer and illumination are 2 different things

the grey DIMMER wire on the truck typically would be connected to the ORANGE dimmer wire on a new radio, NOT the orang/whit illumination

did he unhook the problem wire? and the problem still exists

He unhooked the problem wire and it still exists.. He used an adapter harness... But for some reason his exact quote was "In my experience you follow the LABELS on the wires, not the COLORS".. which i still don't know how he screwed it up.. but he did..

It sounds like the dimmer switch is toast.

does the dimmer control the drl and the auto night sensor?

I'm sorry, I just read headlights, not auto headlights.  I couldn't tell you.  Can you still turn the headlights on manually?  What about the instrument cluster, do the gauges still light up, and can you control them with the dimmer switch?

You can turn the headlights on manually... The cluster works. the gauges light up when turned on manually.. not sure on the dimmer switch though.

It'd be worth checking, then.  The auto headlamps/ drls are probably on the same circuit.  I'd try hunting down a diagram to give you a better idea what to start checking.
