rushed out and bought 2 Alpine SWR-1242D subwoofers and a ROCKFORD FOSGATE P6002 2 channel amp.The installer told me that the amp i bought is not powerful enough to give the 2 Alpine R's subs what they need.He said that it could run one sub in a single box and could rattle my brain. He said to run both subs i needed to buy a different amp probably a mono amp.He said one sub would give me all the power i need at 600 rms with this amp.I have a mitshubihi gallant any suggestions?Would just 1 of the subs and the amp work fine for my setup

That amp will be fine for those subs.  Did you get dual 4 or dual 2 voice coils?  If they're dual 2, run each sub off of a channel.  If you want even more power later, get a monoblock that's at least 1 ohm stable.

The 6002 is fine for 1, but is not near enough for 2. it will only do 600 rms at 4ohm. x 1 channel. the sub is rated 500 watts rms at 4 ohms. the subs will blow from under powering distorstion after a while.

Underpowering is a myth that has been debunked.  You can feed a woofer square waves (a completely "clipped" audio signal)  all day, so long as it's power ratings are not exceeded.  I say that amp's a good match for those subs- they'll each get a hefty 300 watts a piece which is plenty enough to drive them, and you'd be safely within the power limits so you won't blow them.

Ya, should be decent enough. I'd prefer a 1000wt amp, though. Oh well. I guess I'll just run my single Alpine 1242D off of my JBL BP1200.1. I'm not gonna buy a new amp when this one works fine. :D

Thank you, geepherder, you are 100% correct.

Whoever told you that "underpowering" blows subs, pss5075104, is dead wrong.

Clipped signal! An example would be having your gain too high, not matching the input level.

I underpower my subs all the time.  It gives me a cushion for things like clipping and it puts less stress on the woofer.  Your 2 alpines will be fine being run by that fosgate.  Just wire the voice coils in parrallel so they are a 2 ohm load.  Then wire each woofer to its own channel.  It will be more than capable to power those subs.

That's my opinion. Take it, leave it, or correct me.
