hello, i went to fix a kenwood tape deck in a late 80's early 90's toyota pick up. the previous owner did a hack job and the guy i was fixing the radio for did as good a job as the first guy. the guy ran a wire to the fuse box which is a switch'd power supply and connected both the acc and main power wires to it to power the deck.
i went in and used my meter to find other wires. i found 2 constant power wires. one was connected to a lone connector and the other was in the mian harness (RED / black i beleive) i doulbe checked all the other wires and they were right. thought i was done untill i realise that when i put the power wire to the deck with the acc it's like the ignition comes on. and the what was switched power become a constant from the fuse box...anyone know how this might happen...i'm thinking soemthing in the deck...but right now, i'm lost...also, i dont know if it means much but the clock is on and lit up constantly.

do a search on this sites tech for you "specific" year truck.....to go straight to the ign harness for the radio power, (if the radio harness is trashed) When you look the info up you'll also see a radio section.

I'm trying to understand. So, you touched the constant/switched wires together, and the gauge cluster lights up, or something? Do you still have the switched wire connected at the fuse box? If so, that's exactly what should happen. You're backfeeding into an ignition circuit.

alright..let see what i can do here. the deck was working but it would lose it's memory everytime he shut the truck off. so when i went in and looked at it he had both the acc/main power wires connected to the switched wire he put in the fuse box. i tested that wire and it was a switched power source like it should have been. so i used my meter and found a constant power wire in the main harnessand connected the constant power to the constant 12V wire in the harness. once i did that the dash lights would come on as though the key was forward and the switch'd power from the fuse box was a constant power. and also you could turn the unit on without the key turned on. i'm wondering if it's a short in the deck feeding back like was mentiond in the last post or maybe the wires on the wrong side of the fuse...i've never seen it befor, so i'm lost at the moment

Disconnect the switched wire, also ensure the wire you have as constant is indeed that, and not just a wire that rests at positive voltage (like a dome light wire). Test the wire with the door open, and see if it's still hot. Check for a white wire at the ignition switch it should be your constant, and remember to use a fuse.
