Hi There I have just purchased an 1992 Volkswagen golf as little run around. When trying to install a new cd player I noticed all the wires where disconected from the broken radio. Does anyone have any Idea what colour wire is connected to battery and which is 12v. If anyone has a picture of how it should be connected I would be really greatful.

Thanks Ray

Go to general info on this sight, click on vehicle wiring.

There's no switched lead in the harness according to the above link, so there's a couple things you can do.  You can connect it to the constant wire and manually shut off the radio each time (you can install a switch for this if you like).  You could also run your own switched lead from the BLACK / YELLOW wire at the ignition harness to turn on/off with the key (test this wire with a meter).

Hi,
I am also having difficulties understanding the wiring on my MK 2 Golf driver.
Using the above advice I have managed to get the radio functioning, but as mentioned it is always set to 'ON'.
there is a 'spare' cable colored RED / brown which according to the VW manual is for 'ignition key' operation.
I have tried conecting this to the Switched lead (yellow in my case - JVC KD-G111) but it seems to have no effect, Ignition or otherwise.
Can anybody advise me where I am going wrong??
thanks.

The red wire needs to be connected to switched power.  You'll have to find a wire that shows 12 volts only with the key in the on position.  You may be able to use a wire from the cigarette lighter, but I'm not sure.
