installed new head unit, now the interior lights (gauges, light for heater buttons etc) are all out. I reconnected the factory stereo and they're still out.

Sounds like a ground to me. Make sure you have every thing back the way it was. make sure you put all the screws back in. Did you cut any wires? Did you use a wire kit????

didn't cut any wires - just stuck the wires from the stereo into the factory connector

You most likely grounded out your dimmer wire. check for a blown fuse.

you need to get a wire harness kit for your after market hu to your oem harness. you can't just shove wires in to the plugs. go to your local car audio shop and they can help you out. ------------- Big Dave

Agree with Big Dave, you most likely grounded the dark green wire. Look for the blown fuse in the fuse block under the hood.

The same thing happened to me in my Corolla, it turned out to be my tail light fuse.

you were all right - turns out the tail light fuse was blown (and kept blowing) due to my poor-man's wire harness
guess I was too excited to have a real stereo to pay attention to non-essentials like tail lights
thanks a lot for all your help!

Any time Dude. You have to take your time, and do things right the first time. It will save you a lot of B.S. and money.
