Whats the easiest way to test a used cd player to see if it works without actually hooking it up in a car?

You can power it up using a car battery. Take the constant and switched power wires and hook them to the positive terminal, ground wire to negative, and see if the unit turns on when you push power.
If you've got a speaker handy, you can hook the speaker wires up to it.
