Subject: Connecting remote turn-on to several amps

Hi folks,

I am a new member here and would like to ask a question.  I am upgrading the stereo in my car from a single amp to three amps (front/rear/sub).  How do I connect the remote turn-on from the head unit to all three amps?  Do I just splice in three wires into the one output?  If so, where is the best  place and procedure to do it?  What gauge wire and other part do I need?  Will the signal be strong enough to turn on all three amps?

Thanks in advance

Ron

My usual rule of thumb is with three or more amps, use a relay.

There is no such thing as free installation!

i agree it will work initially but you'll run the risk on frying your rem turn on output.  more importantl is your grounding and power lead installation.  make sure you carefully plan that too.

Thanks.  I've never done this.  Is there any instructions, parts list, or diagrams on how to do it?

Thanks.  I'm going to use 4 ga wire for power from the battery to the dist. box and from there 8 ga to each amp.  Ground is also 8 ga from each amp to a dist. box and then 10 ga to ground.

Thanks a bunch!  I saw this diagram on the web site but didn't know if it was also applicable to my application.  Thought maybe it was for alarm systems only.  I guess it works the same!

Any fusing?  If so how much and how many?

Use a relay set it up like this....

30 - 12volts fused

85 - Remote Turn On

86 - Ground

87 - Amps turn on leads.

Two more questions please...

Does the 12v line need to be direct from the battery or can I use the same line that feeds the constant-on 12 v to the tuner?

Also, do I need to step down the voltage going to the the amps since the remote turn on is ( I think) lower voltage?

Up above, I noticed what you wrote about your ground distribution- 8 gauge from the amps- 10 gauge to ground.  I hope this is a typo.  Your power and ground cabling should be the same size- if you use 4 gauge from the battery, use 4 gauge for ground as well.  Also, consider upgrading the factory ground wires to at least 4 gauge.  You can do a search on the big 3.

No, you don't have to go to the battery to power the relay.  I'd probably just wire it in behind the deck (use the yellow for power, black for ground, etc.).  Use a seperate fuse coming off the yellow- 3A or 5A will be fine.  You can use 18 gauge for the remote.

Thanks for the info.  Yes, I am using 4 ga from the battery and to the ground.  However I will use 8 ga to each individual amp.

BTW, can I just put relay for the remote turn on in the trunk and run it off of the power cable coming from the battery to the dist. box?

Nitro,

yes you can power it off the amp power.

Jlord,

yes you can pick up relays at the store- some places have prewired relay sockets, too- you just have to connect the wires.

Thanks to everyone that responded to my questions.  Sorry for repeating this question again but I didn't see a response:

Do I need to somehow step down the voltage going to the the amps from the relay since the remote turn on is ( I think) lower voltage? If so how do I do it?

The remote out from the deck is 12V. No step down at all.

03impalla, if you are refering to the fuse on the remote on wire, a 1 amp fuse for each line is more than sufficient.
