Hey, I recently got a new car which had a cheap sub (a bazooka tube sub) in the trunk, and that's fine for now. But my front speakers sound terrible when I turn the bass up, and I was looking to start upgrading my system from there. My questions are: How can I figure out how good of speakers I can get before I need an amp? Is it even worth getting new good speakers before getting an amp? Are there any sites with complete noob guides to all this that aren't so techincal (like on this site) and have explinations of car audio systems?

i would just get a amp, and get it out of the way. your going to need a 2 or 4 channel down the road anyway.

It doesn't really matter what you do unless you purchase an amp this will not go away.
For that matter, what kinda CD player does the car have?

and do you have a x-over on your speakers? and how high is the bass setting on the deck?

Huh? This is not necessarily true... unless I don't understand what you're trying to say. To answer your question ryeguy, you can use any speakers you want to use. The fix for your problem depends what is causing the "terrible" sound. Are you driving the HU into clipping? Are you over-driving the speakers? Do you have the bass all the way up (which can cause both of the above)? What conditions cause this, and what equipment is being used? ------------- Support the12volt.com

I actually don't use a CD player, I use an mp3 player with a cassette adapter, which I know produces lower bass, but I use the built in equalizer to up it a bit. Remember, I'm new, so I have no idea what clipping or overdriving means. Yes, I do have my bass all the way up, but I have a friend who does the same and has less distortion with his stock speakers. He has a '02 ford mustang however, and I have a '96 mercury cougar, but our radios are the same so I'm guessing our speakers can't be that much different (mercury is owned by ford).

I think a new deck would do a whole lot more for you then any other upgrade at this point. Even a cheap entry level that plays MP3 files would make a huge difference.
