Do you just have bare wires, or are there plugs?  If there are plugs, you need to get a wiring harness adapter for your car.

Otherwise, https://www.the12volt.com/installbay/detail.asp?info=alarm&year=1986-92&make=Volkswagen&model=Golf&ID=19101&type=Stereo.  Test these wires with a meter to verify their function.  If the plugs have been cut off, there's a good chance you may have a blown fuse somewhere.

You will not have a switched wire in the dash, so you will have to run your own.  Check under the dash on the driver's side for a barrier strip somewhere.  I don't know if there's one in that car or not.  Look for a wire or terminal that only has power when the key is turned on- that will be your switched, and you will need to run a wire from this to the red wire on your new radio.
