I have a choice to make right now. What will have more spl, 3 kicker compvrs 15's wired down to 2.67ohms using a jbl 1200 bp.1 amp in a sealed enclosure. Or 2 kicker l715's in a vented enclosure wired down to 2ohms, using the same amp but I will use add a sub sonic filter to the amp so I dont damage the i7's. Now remember Im not looking for sq just spl, And the amp wires will all be 0/1 gauge and I already have an ho alt that is 220.

Thanks

How High is Chinese.......

About as similar a statement.

Want the honest opinion? It depends on a LOT of things.

- 3x15" has more cone area than the 2x15" More cones, move more air.

- It is ALL about the box. You can take a very expensive sub. Put that expensive sub into a crappy box, and you will get marginal performance. Take the same car, amp, and a cheapo sub that is in a perfect box..... the cheapo will do better.

This is a technically loaded question.......

I kinda of figure that, but we are talking 3 round 15's against 2 square 15's that are suppose to be the best of kicker. Now about the enclosures, both will be built according to kicker specs, so Im undecided, but its cheaper for the 3 15;s I know that for a fact, but I dont want to be cheap and come out on the short end, so I want to know which is louder, and educated guess, will do real good.

Thanks

Here's a look at the three compvr's:  cb_response_kicker_compvr15.gif

You can go with a lot more power than you have.  Go to 1500 watts for an increase of about 5 db  And note that this is a large box:  5 to 7 cu ft.  You'll have to make a determination of how much space you can give up for it.  The ported box will be even bigger.

The SD for three VR's is 2643 cm^2.  SD for two L7's is 2112 cm^2.  So the three round drivers have more cone area than the two L7's.

Here's a ported response for the two L7's using a 7 cu ft box (plus port) and equivalent port area of 7.5" diameter  X 12.9" length round port.  Fb is 30 Hz.  vb_response_kicker_s15l72.gif  Make sure you use a good subsonic 24 db filter set at 25 Hz.  The graph shows response without the ss filter.

Power can be increased substantially to these as well, going up to 2000 watts.  You could gain 5 db with that, too.  And the SPL increases much more because of cabin gain.  Actual in-car db levels will be higher than the graphs show for that reason.

The L7's in a vented box will have the edge in SPL, and you can work with box size and ports a little more on your own, too.  But you should really provide more power if SPL is what you want.  Decide on the amount of power before you design the port, etc. because with more power the area of vent opening has to be larger.  For 600 watts input, the size port I showed above is large enough that you won't get port noise.  You can calculate the equivalent slotted port ( pi R^2 ).  How-to is spelled out in this previous thread:

Build the box so that it performs well in the worst case scenario and, in return, it will reward you at all times.

Okay, What amplifer do you think I should get? I have always stuck with the jbl's because they do a great job at making amps and they have never let me down unlike other amps that I have had over the years. I was looking at the directed amps and soundstream amps, but i heard that power accoustik owns them so thats a no no.

I also was looking at the mtx 1501 amp because it puts out a lot more then mtx states right?

I would stay away from the 15 L7's      I have not seen anything good come of them in the SPL world and on the street.

The 12" L7 gets much louder in SPL use, and is a much better sub to use on the street

get 2 type x kickers those things are insane, they will kill the 3 15's and the 2 l7's and are well worth the money

yea, the solo x's would be nice but most people cant afford to get the 5000WRMS and the charging system to support a system like that

correct if i'm wrong but probaly the 2 kicker l715's will be slightly louder than the 3 kicker compvrs 15's because the 3 compvrs 15 are 1500 watt rms and you will use an 1200 watt rms amp to power them and they are in sealed box thus you will need 1500 watt rms to let them perform at the max, and yes they have more cone area but less xmax compared to the l7, and if they are in sealed it's hard they reach their xmax. now the mtx 1501d it will be a good choice because they are very underrating, like they are rating at 1500 wrms at 2 ohm but on the birthsheet you can get an 1501d that can produce 1800 or 1900 watt rms at 2 ohm i have a friend that have one of these baby and at 2 ohm it is measured 1937 wrms.

Who cares what the RMS power rating is..... a 600w sub will handle 600w.... it doesen't put out any wattage. That is the amplifiers job.

I generally follow a 1.5x RMS rule for powering any sub or midbass. If it handles 500W RMS, then I will feed it at least 750w RMS. Little thing called headroom.......

Ok first i am wondering where are you getting this under rated idea. I have yet to hear such a concept in good quality modern amps, and not underrated but over rated. The only amp i doubted was a phenox gold and that was because it said it was 2000 watts rms but it had 8 gauge wire terminals. I believe you are confused with terminalog RMS does not mean max power it basaclly means avg power used durring normal play. A sealed encolsure does not make it harder for it to reach its max power handling. I put l7's in a car and we matched RMS, i could not even sit in the car or stand near it my ears hurt so bad and i doubt you will ever play music that loud unless its for a spl compition because of noise ordinance.

yah i have no idea where the under rating is coming from either, like i just bought the new v12 1000 watt rms amp from alpine, and each one is tested individually, and gets its own certificate with what it put out, and mine was 1067 watts at 2ohms, and with 14.4 volts, but they rate it for 1000, i know 67 watts doesnt seem like much, but the way it sounds you are goin in competion or soemthing, so every bit counts

alright man hear is what you do you get two kicker l7 12''s and make a pure spl box for it and jeffchilcott can help you with that. he is the main man when it comes to the spl world. and for the amp you should go with as you said JBL they are rock solid amps and have never let me down. there is a web site that jeff can post or give you that has refurbished kicker stuff there that is gust as good if not better then the new stuff. if you could tell use what kind of car you have, how much space you have and the goal you are trying to reach. if you are trying to go competition or gust to be EXTREAMLY loud for road use. you can either go with kicker amps or the in my opinion JBL amps.
