I just bought a Alpine CDA-9855. My question is about the yellow power wire.... its much bigger than the one in the truck harness. Is there some other way I should power the head unit? Use a heavy duty relay?

Yellow should be the memory. I've never needed to use anything else. If you'd like you can probably find a hot spot in the fuse box to power it.

Yellow is main power.... What I am going to do is run a larger wire from the battery and use the stock power wire to flip a relay to power the head unit. So it still shuts off with the key out .....

You shouldn't need to use a switch, but you can run a fused lead directly from the battery if you want to. The red wire on the radio's harness is the accessory wire, so as long as it is hooked up properly the radio will only work with the key. -------------

true; if you wire the yellow wire with a relay that cuts power whenever you turn off the key, you'll lose all your settings (EQ's, radio stations, etc.) every time you turn off the key. Just run a fused 12 or 14ga wire straight to the battery.
