Ok i have a small problem, i guess my escort has a really craptastic alternator (75A). So what is cheaper/better, rewinding or buying a new HO alt?

ok, so i have a guy about an hour away, says he can rewind it to plus 100. Which i assume would mean 175A, or maybe he ment 100 or a little over. And he says he can do it for 80$ . The high output i can get a 160A for 240$. My only question now is, will a rewound alt work just as good as the HO?

I'm sure the "plus 100" means he can rewind it to just over 100 amps.  A rewound alt will never be as good as an alternator designed as an HO unit, IMO.  But $80 is a pretty good deal for another 25 amps.  Make sure that price includes replacing the diodes, brushes, etc. with parts designed for the higher current.

Well, i think i'm going to go with a custom built 180A alt. I was qouted 265 shipped. Would i need to worry about upgrading any other parts? voltage regulator or is it right in the alt?

On a side note
My system (bp600.1 18X4 Hu) makes my lights dim, but when i take a reading off the amp i get 14 volts and better. It jumps around from 14.2 to 14.5. Should'nt it be lower?

You could upgrade with the BIG 3. Seach the site if you dont know what that is.

14.2 to 14.5 at the amp is awesome.  Is that with your meter, or is that a display on the cap or amp?  If that's with a good multimeter, I'd do the big 3, and consider upgrading to a relayed headlight harness.  This should take care of your dimming.  You may not even need another alt, so try this other stuff first.

With that kind of voltage you really shouldnt need a new alt. Im running a BP600.1 and a 80.4 and my stock alt is holding up fine.
