what causes the thump sound evrytime i turn on my head unit?

Are you running amps? What brand, on an amp its the "soft start" the is supposed to keep that from happening few amplifiers still don't use them. some are cheap components that sill let it happen. But it does not hurt you're speakers when you hear this thump

Yes, what vehicle, equipment, etc.  It sounds to me like an amp turn on pop.  You can do a search on google for turn on pop eliminators.

You can use one of these.  Or, if you are electronically-inclined, go to the relay section of this site for info on how to build a relay with a time delay.
