hey guys,

i just got a jl 1000/1 and 13w7.  i have a kicker 800.4 for my highs.  i went to a shop to install and they reccomend a new alternator and yelow top.  i asked if i could get away with a yellow top and a capacitor.  they said i would need a really big capaictor.  the guy recommended a 50 farad.  i think thats a bit large but im not to familiar with capacitors.  all i know is that the bigger they are, the bigger the load on my battery and alternator.  a friend of mine said that the guy at the shop is an idiot trying to sell me a 50 farad capacitor ($500+).  he also said i only need like a 2-3 farad for the system im going with.  my stock alternator is 136 amps.  will this put too much of a load on my batt. and alt.?  Im trying to avoid a new alt. as much as possible.

thanks for all suggestons.

Why spend $500 on a cap, that inevitably strain your alternator, leading to an alternator upgrade.

Get the alternator first and a gel cell battery if you intend on listening to your system with the car off. Then, lastly add some caps if you feel inclined.

I don't know about pricing for your vehicle, but I will advise you to go local if possible. This will eliminate some headaches associated with mail order brands.

But if you do not have the option to go the local route, Stinger, Mechman, Dominick Iraggi (ebay listings), Ohio Green, Zena and the list goes on. I think it is safe to say that every one of those listed companies has its critics.

Have a look through these
