The radio antenna is a ground, and connects to the chassis ground of the radio anyway, regardless of whether it's the factory radio or an aftermarket.  Make sure the antenna is plugged in all the way, and if this has a power antenna ensure it is going up on radio sources.  Some lower end Kenwood decks don't have any output on the blue wire for power antenna, so you have to use the blue/white.

The Mercedes contains a powered amplified antenna. Get buddy at Best Buy back in the car and tell him to trigger the antenna properly. If it worked before with the factory deck there is no reason why it shouldn't work now.
There is also a higher end antenna adapter available to help with this type of situation. But first have them check for hte trigger.

they need to use the Amplified antenna adapter not the regular antenna adapter.....

I had one a while back that needed the antenna amplifier to be triggered on.

kgerry is right it should be an amplified antenna adaptor, Metra part 40VW53 will work, the non-amplified is 40VW10.

Be careful with the 40VW53 1997 was the first year of use and I believe only on Volks Wagons. This adaptor feeds power into the coax cable itself and fuses could start popping. I thought the wire for the amped antenna is on main harness.
