Subject: Lets start a new trend

Ok, I've decreased my posting on this forum to nothing over the past few months due to the repetative topics created. Almost everything asked has been answered 20 times before.

But that's not what I'm here to say now. I'm annoyed by all the people that spew wattage and dB numbers without a single mention of THD/SQ(they say SQ, but have they measured it?)

I want to start a new trend. Instead of a 1k+ watt system that can hit 150dB, why don't we try for a 1/3 octave c-weighted +-3dB from 20~20khz at 80~90 dB.

IMO this would be MUCH "cooler" then having a system that has a +-30dB from 20~500hz with 10% THD.

I don't really care how much power you use to get to the "ruler flat" frequency response. Use whatever means necessary.

Unfortunately I know that this will NEVER happen due to the fact that you can throw together an all bass system capable of hitting 150dB for ~$500

I'd just like to see all these young people getting into our hobby be influenced the right way. SQ should be the number ONE goal of ANY system. SPL should come second to that. Unfortunately younger people are being mislead into believing that the louder it is, the better it is, no matter what.

I guess when you reach that 150dB distortion doesn't really matter because you can't hear anything at all

Although I agree wtih you here, audio is simply a matter of taste, so you are right  you probably won't see any body spewing numbers about how flat their RTA readings are, but if you'd like you can meter my car.

Bass is fun, it's like fast cars, people are drawn to it. I still like big bass, but I MUCH prefer a well balanced, good sounding system.

Thats' why there are sq and spl competitions.

I also would like to know how you can "throw together an all bass system capable of hitting 150db for~$500"  If you can do it let me know, I know plenty of people who have "thrown together" an all bass sysem for no less than $2000, and still aren't capable of breaking 150 db on a term-lab meter!

I will second that, we spent wuite a few moonts and well over $1500 to have a system that did over 150db.   153.5 to be exact.

That was on one battery and one alternator both in the factory locatation, and all equipment behind the strut towers.

I know I can back up my teams specs.     Feel free to look up my Girlffriend    Meghan Bailey, she competes in USACi, and ran 301-900 Basic stock last year.

If anyone else wants to brag it dosent mean anything untill you can back it up, Visit Soundoff.org to check our stats

Meghan Bailey
Scott Thomas

That is 2 of our listed members

This year we will have an SQ car in the lanes as well, but whats next we will hear someone say I know people who can throw an SQ car together for less then $500

I know we are almost $2000 into the SQ car and we dont have any speakers yet.   And thats at My cost!

That's not a new trend, it's what I've done for years.  And as has been stated above, there is NO competition-level "thrown together" system possible for $500.  It's the kids who lie about their untested or non-standard test SPL numbers and who boast about their 2KW fake peak ratings in their $500 systems that clog up this and other boards with their BS.  Notice that none of the pros ever do that, unless they are asked (or unless the thread is about that.)

I have to agree, nothing like a good SQ system.
There is more fun and designing of a good SQ system then meer bass.

I can't stand to sit in an all bass system, i have ears that are to well musically trained to tolerate it, especally cause most have the gains set way to high.

A few thoughts.

I agree with Poorman, a lot of the top posters are not here as much. Ham Fist, Kgerry, Sedate, Alpine Guy, Paradigm and Auex. Don't see as much of these guys anymore. And where is Steven Kephart ?It does get boring answering the same questions, but that's kinda why we're here.

I've always equated SPL owners with having a slight " look at me " insecurity complex. But hey, I'll put it in if you'll pay for it.

Poorman, hang around, you are always good at stirring up the pot!

I am not gonna lie to you guys.  I started in with the bass.  Spent $800 and hit 133db in competition, I know impressive.  I have however gained a ton of knowledge, mostly thanks to the great people in here that are always willing to offer help.  It is greatly appreciated.  I have now however moved more towards sound quality, which I am currently working on a car that probably won't ever compete but it is fun anyways.  A good sound setup is bit more tricky than just bass but I love a challenge.  Don't give up on everybody yet they might come around.  Just out of curiosity and having never cometed in SQ or read much into a judgeing but is it always c-weighted (80 phons)?

I am 20 and know jack about all the SERIOUS SQ meterings and all that. but obviously I started out with wanting thump, like every teenager does. MY *bump* system got stolen, so having been doing wood work and construction for 6 years when I am not at school, I built a pretty good system for a 20 year old to have built. did all the calculations and built a box with a QTC of .752... I can simlate a big bigger with some fill, but decided I dont need it any closer to .707 I dont think. I know have a relatively pretty inexpensive system, but it sounds excelent to me. I wont ever build or buy a SPL system, SPL is a dumb game once you start listening to alright quality music. I DRIVE my car, lots, and I dont want to go deaf by the time im 40, and this is reasonable, dont need to worry about blowing parts, and investing tons more. all the big alternators or anything.

I dont even know how they test those SQ cars, I do know how they meter the SPL, but sq seems wierd to have metered in those Quality competitions. and well to sum it all up. SQ kicks some serious ass!

and to Tcss's comment...
I've always equated SPL owners with having a slight " look at me " insecurity complex. But hey, I'll put it in if you'll pay for it.

YES, agree completely! Whenever I drive around them $500 SPL hondas you can tell they do want you to look at there ghetto ass one hand on the wheel, practically sitting in the back seat of their two door car as the bumpers rattle off, cause they stare at you with there crooked hat.

I've had the impression all along that graduating to SQ was the ultimate goal.  The most recognized responders in this forum have always been dedicated to putting forth the notion that everything done be done right.  And you know what?  When you put the effort it takes into making your enclosure right, in selecting speakers instead of settling for them, into finding out how and then doing a proper adjustment of amp gains, you're already halfway there.  No matter how loud the SPL is.

Eventually, with all the new knowledge and along with a great bunch of others ( the forum) who have the same interests, it becomes a hobby.  Then, SPL can become a fun project and SQ is what you listen to when you drive.  It's all good.

As far as Poorman's post, IMO:  Everybody tires of repitition.  The ones who know the most and are actively involved in this as daily work are the ones who can, and do, give the most valuable input.  But how they do it, I don't know.  Work all day, help again by internet.  That's real dedication (and I won't list names but appreciate what I have learned from you).  The ones who want to initially post the most are the ones who are learning while doing...I am one of those.  It's less tiresome and repetitive when you can learn something that you can apply.  Even then, the questions don't change much.  But then you have to ask yourself, "...but why should the questions change because I've grown?"  Which is why there is eventually a burnout time for everybody.

Everybody, to the person, who is a frequent poster on this forum is a communicator.  We like to get involved with other people who share the same interest.  Most of us can't find that in our everyday lives and so we use a forum.  And when a good forum is found, and it's active as hell like this one, you've got your opening.  Try to find someone in MY everyday existance who knows or cares very much about this world...not enough to get into any kind of a real conversation with, that's for sure.

....dinner's ready.  We're going to talk about the weird girl my wife works with...    ;)

no one answered my question of were or what subs and amps you can put together to hit 150 db for $500 , someone just said they spent $800 and only hit 133 db so i dont get how you can figure $500 can put together a system that hits 150 db

I don't think that's the point of this thread, perhpas you could start a new topic on it.

Yet again stevdart you so eloquently laid it on the table, well put (the entire response actually). There are times when the forum slows and the questions become redundant but these questions are still valid because they are genuine and they should be answered just like the ones before it. There are times when I come home from working on cars all f'ing day and at that point I don't even want to think about bloody car stereos, but I find it relaxing satisfying to help and learn, more.

my 2 cents says sq is in the ear of the listener. I have heard some crazy loud crap that the kid thought  was the best  thing since white bread. Me I like sq, but I like some power behind it and some good bass, so I guess I'm in the middle somewhere. I would guess that most of us are. to be a true sq purist would seem to be kinda dull to me. to be a spl purist would seem pointless to me. I understand compitions and stuff, but for a daily driver I can't see it for me. as always your results may differposted_image

Why do most people want a system they can hear 3 cars in front of and behind you? I like my bass, but I prefer an all around good quality sound that I can hear in my trk. If I wanted to hear someone elses tunes, I'd be in there car.
