I got a radio with a 50 ohms antenna input and a car with a 150 ohms antenna and cable.

While it works okay with a universal adapter cable, which is simply a straight through connection, I wonder whether any benefits would be gained by using a device to match the impedances?

Yes.

Bit late to respiond, as I missed the notification of your reply.

Obsious follow-on question: how can you achieve this?

I thought you already had one.  I've never built one- I've used them before when installing antennas in houses with the old ribbon style cable as opposed to coax cable.  You get more channels when you use a proper adapter.

Search the net for one that's available, otherwise you'd be hunting for a diagram and piecing it together.

Well, I have been looking for impedance matchers, but haven't found readily suitable for this application. Most are for transmitters, not for receivers, and are therefore way too bulky and expensive. I think it should be possible with just a couple of resistors, at the expensive of some loss of energy, or a transformer, but no idea where to get a suitable one.
