I would recommend browsing around on the basics section of this site, checking out www.bcae1.com , and even looking around on crutchfield and JL audio's websites (both of which have box building how-to's).  Your question is very generic which leads me to believe you are going into this blindly.  Once you have read a little bit about the basics of the construction (materials, bracing, finishing, etc...) get a copy of winisd, which is a free online program to help calculate boxes and ports, and start pushing the numbers through.  If you have any questions throughout any of this feel free to post back here.   Just be specific, subs, amp, what you are looking to accomplish as far as sound and looks, and we will all be happy to help you out.

Good subs- go to a local dealer who caries them and give them a listen for yourself.

crossover vs. equalizer, which one is best to use for a full sound system?

The two devices do entirely different things. An EQ is used to adjust the sound by tailoring the amplitude of the frequencies in the signal.  A crossover is used to remove entire frequency bands to ensure best performance from specific speaker types.  Which you use depends on what you need to do.  All systems use crossovers of some sort.  Not all systems require EQ.

Figure out your budget first. You can have the meanest subs in the world but if they are in the wrong box or given the wrong type of amp, do not expect the best of results. Unless you are real good with woodwork (ie, no jigsaw or skilsaw to make your cuts), get the box built for you as it is the single most important part of the sub system. Without it, you have nada, zip, zilch, zero. It is all about the box.

Dare to be different just by a bit. After the last mega system we built here, I would take a real good look at the Xtant X2 subs. I would also step up with a amplifier that is also a little more realistic in it's output power and build quality. Consider one of the big MTX mono amplifiers or the Eclipse mono amplifiers. Your system will thank you for years to come. Try and match the 4 channel amp to the mono sub amp as well. If you are going to do this, do it right. I am a big fan of having things match for aesthetic purposes, thus I would try and keep my amps the same brand.

I still really recommend taht you take the time to really ensure that you understand all of the basics about this before putting together a decntly complicated setup (anything with more than just a single amp or sealed box), as I get the impression that you may be a little bit confused about some things.  Other than that I can tell you that most people on here (including myself) would recommend going with components in the front , however if you are more comfortable with a high quality coax that is not ecessarily a bad thing.  Budget is a big factor in all recommendations, so if you let us know what you are looking to spend on different items then we will be able to give you much better recommendations.

$375  for just the sub and box? or for sub, box, and amp?  The type r's are a good choice as well as the X2s that forbidden told you about (although if I remember right they might be a little more pricey).  Are you dead set on two 12s or would you consider one 12?  All of these things matter, and jus tlike forbidden said, its really all about the box, a well built box can make even the worst of subs sound decent, and a poorly built one can make the best sound like nails rattling around in a tin can.

They are not the best subs in the world, but these Pheonix Golds'

https://www.ikesound.com/product-product_id/3409

are good. A friend has them in his car, and they hit plenty hard. Sound quality isn't bad, either.

Pheonix isn't what it used to be, but on a budget, these are a good starting point.

Why do you think the Alpine type "Rs" are not that good? Just curious.

what 4 channel amp are you picking up for $125?  be careful what brand amps you get when buying a 4 channel, poor quality amps on your mids and highs can make a whole stereo sound horrible.

I think a Type R or two is a great choice. I love those subs. They sound great, and are LOUD when put in the proper enclosure.

Put them in an enclosure built to spec, and play around with the positioning.

Well thats as simple as properly powering them, and building a box to spec (soundinig more and more like you are going to want ported).

Throw them in an enclosure with 1.3 ft^3 for each 12 tuned to 33hz, give 'em enough power, and they should be plenty loud.

depends on what the problem specifically is...  tighten the latch, plaster it in sound deadener, weld a brace across the trunk lid.  Depends on what it is that is rattling.

its more of the top of the trunk and the licsence plate does dynomat work good

Dynamatt works good as long as you have realistic expectations. Also check and see if its the licsence plate rattling or the frame around it. If there is a frame than take it off, if its the plate then line the back of the plate with dynamatt. As for the trunk lid, several layer should take car of your issue.

You will get a lot of people on here telling you to just put it in the box and turn it around till it sounds best to you, this is very true.  In my personal experience it has always been best to just fire it towards the back, I know this isnt always the best way, but for me it has always worked very well.

sound pressure level, really loud systems are spl systems

Posted By: boardinbum

SPL stands for Sound Pressure Level. It's usually measured in decibles (db's). When someone says they have an "Spl setup" it means that their equipment is just geared toward being really loud or producing high sound pressure levels.

The Alpine Type R is a great sub (one of my favorites in that price range). It produces very good sound quality and still gets pretty damn loud when put in the correct box and is paired with a well matched amp.
If you choose to upgrade to a Type R, I would definitely suggest also upgrading to a higher quality amp, and either building a custom box to Alpine's specs or having one made at a local shop.
