I wanted to spread the word on a benz problem that I had never encountered before. Installed a sub amp in a 2005 clk 320; however the volume of the entire audio system(not just the subs) would fluctuate randomly. It was hooked up via a hi to low convertor with the stock bose system at the bose amp. Well, finally figured out  the solution is to remove the ambient microphone. You can find this mic hidden inside the headliner to the right of the sunroof controls.

The purpose of the mic is to adjust the volume of the radio based on cabin noise?

Yes... it adjusts the volume while in ambient mode. So, the low frequencies were making it go crazy.

Another issue with the Bose system is that there is a batch of amps 2004-2005 that needs to be flashed with new firmware. I spoke with the techs at the benz dealer i go to and was told that the the amp will suddenly blast at high volumes then return to low. However removing/disableing the mic should be the first step.
