Dual voice coil vs. single

Which is better and why? What is the proper way to connect dual voice coil woofers? If only one voice coil is connected and the other is not will this harm to the woofer? I did a search on here and found tons of info but not to specific to my questions thats the purpose of this thread. Thanks in advance for your help. Fred

you need to connect both coils in a DVC subwoofer. It depends on what ohm load you want the amplifier to see on how you wire it. either in series or parallel. for example, a DVC 4 ohm sub, will be able to give you 2 or 8 ohms total, or a DVC 2 ohm sub will give you 1 or 4 ohms depending on wiring.

sub wont be near potential i would imagine, possibly break, but why find out, I've never been dumb enough to test it myself? When choosing what kind of subs (SVC or DVC) you want, you need to first preferably know what kind of amp you are going to run. And if you want 1 or 2 or 3 or whatever subs. If you plan on having 2 12s on a amp that can only go to 2 ohm stable, you would want 2 SVC subs, so the amp would see 2 ohms. If you have a monoblock that is 1 ohm stable, you would probably want 2 DVC subs to give the amp 1 ohm of total impedence. post what amp you have, or want, and Someone will tell you what you should do.

The power ratings are split between the two voice coils on a dvc sub.  So if you only hook up one, you're cutting the power handling ability in half.  Would you buy a 2 channel amp to only use one channel, no.  It's basically just for different wiring options.  If you had a customer that wanted two woofers instead of one, you can series-parallel two 4 ohm dvc woofers to get a 4 ohm load to the amp.  If this doesn't all make sense, don't worry, click on woofer wiring on the left side of the screen.  How you wire everything is dependent on the equipment you have- subs (how many, single or dual, impedance), amps (what kind of load it can handle), etc.

im sure someone's already said this (actually i doub it)... but the number of voice coils doesn't at all affect the quality, spl, or ssq of a driver.. its simply a way to get different wiring options.

Yes you can damage a dual voice coil woofer by only hooking up one coil.
