I am replacing the rear speakers in a 1997 Dodge Intrepid. The old speakers had a 4 connector pin - I am assuming one set for woofer and one for tweeter. The new speaker set - Lanzar VB series - only has a two-point connection. How do I wire the new speakers - or should I replace the old speakers with a set that has a 4 connector set up?
WE need some more information. First, did the dodge have the infinity sound system that's offered as a factory option? or do you just have the standard 4-speaker radio system?
II'm guessing you meant to say "4-pin connector" instead of "4-connector pin", but nonetheless, what shape is the factory plug/connector? Is it rectangular, square, or oval? If it's rectangular, then all you need to worry about are the two wires in the center. One will go to the positive speaker terminal on your new speakers, and the other will go to the negative speaker terminal on your new speakers. I suggest grabbing yourself a speaker harness from an install shop near you (all the chain stores carry them too), and this way you won't have to guess which factory wire is positive and which is negative.
Thanks for the reply. I believe it has the Infinity system as it has 6 speakers. I just bought the car used and did not get the original sticker with the installed options.
The plug is a flat, rectangular plug with the four wires in line. The right rear is tan with stripes as follows: Red, Purple, Black and Green. The left rear is white with stripes as follows: Purple, Red, Black and Green. It confuses me a little bit that the center wires are different color stripes from one speaker to the other.
I've seen some where they do not have the infinity system, but still have 6 speakers (well 4 full-range and two tweeters in the dash), so you can't just go by that.
If your radio says Infinity somewhere on it, then u have the infinity system. You also may see a thumstick control for the fade/balance, as well as 4 or 5 different EQ bands. If it doesn't say infinity on it or have any of those things on it, then you probably don't have the infinity system.
my advice remains the same--go buy a speaker harness to connect them. It'll make it a whole lot easier for you, and you can easily go back to the way it was before if you ever want to put the speakers in a new car, or sell the car.
