I've done a fair amount of research and I get the concept, but the main question I have, is how do you wire it into the car??? I have an alpine 9813 and I was wondering how I would get the carputer to work with the deck to send the music through the car... also, if there is someone who knows the exact install of a carputer, would you be willing to explain so theres a single topic to help all people looking... thanks in advance

Artsar:

Most folks using caputers use a touch screen replacement for the deck.

If you must keep your Alpine, make sure it has aux. input.

Power?  A regulated 12 to 120 inverter:

This one would work with almost any computer out there.  I'm sure there are cheaper that will work...

i realized that people replace the desk with a monitor... but i was reading in another forum to have an FM transmiter and the desk would be tuned to that for sound...

how different is a car pc then a home pc?, like control wise... trough the touch screen... also how do you wire the cars speakers and what not to the PC... are there special sound cards???

A step by step of how it all is conected physically would be quite helpful...

PS. thanks for the help kfr01

FM modulators are not great for sound reproduction, but neither are the mp3's people store on their computers.  I agree, use an auxiliary input- if that means buying an adapter do so, just avoid the fm modulator if possible.

Use the auxiliary input, u dont need to use an inverter, you can acutally buy computer power supplies that run off a 12volt input instead of the standard 240volts, my mates builing a carputer atm and we ordered the 12volt power supply but an inverter will do the same job.  Cheack out this site by chris on the build of his carputer

Don't use fm.  Use the aux.

Build a regular PC.  You need some sort of soundcard with analog output.  If you use the aux. in on your deck you can then use the deck's amplifier.

If you use a pc without a regular car deck, then you'd need a separate amplifier.

So.

PC -->  Analog ouput on soundcard --> Deck Aux Input or Separate Amplifier --> Speakers

thanks for the help... I think I have a pretty good idea of how exactly it works... I'll have a diagram up soon, so see if anyone can see a possible flaw in the wiring idea i have

and if those don't work

heres the link

https://img254.imageshack.us/my.php?image=possiblecarputerdiagram2nu.jpg

basicly would I be able to signal from both the deck and the carputer to the amps??? like connect the signal wires and plug them into the amps? Last time I checked there wasn't an input on my deck for aux sound... should I sell this deck and get one with aux sound???

Comments and concerns? Tips?

If you have a double-din area for your stereo, get a Mac Mini and mount it in the second din. Then find a spot in the car for the touch-screen.

You can find them cheap (about $4-500) and it has bluetooth built-in and WiFi built-in. Basically, park it in your garage and connect to it remotely from inside to upload music and such. You could also control it with a bluetooth keyboard and mouse. It's got a regular headphone out jack too I believe so you could mate that with an RCA adapter and plug it whereever is necessary.

Just my $0.02.

And an additional thought to that - you really could replace the head unit entirely with the mac mini, put a flip-out screen in the second DIN, and run a USB FM tuner.

The mini has a slot for CD's in the front.
