Yes, you do that with resisters.  Use non-inductive audio grade resisters rated at least 10W, or an audio L-pad.  HERE's a calculator to figure out what values you'll need if you use fixed resisters.

Yes, it's like mustard.  A special sauce reserved for only the chosen few.  Spread it on your woofers and you're good for an extra 6db!
