Subject: Poor AM reception in H2 Hummer

Recently installed an AVIC-N2 into a 2003 Hummer H2.  There is really poor am reception.  Anything I can do to help this? My antenna connections have been checked, and they are very solid.  Only thing I can think of is the GM antenna adapter is causing some sort of problem.  I would doubt the antenna has a problem being that its a fairly new truck.  Any suggestions would help. Thanks!

try grounding the outer sleave on the antenna at the radio.

Check the antenna connection under the passenger kick panel, like you said you could have a bad antenna adaptor,,,

I've had brand new antenna's be faulty so don't rule it out, the ground would be most likely.

Use a ohm meter to check the antenna's ground. The outer shielding/contact at the lead tip must have less than 1/2 ohm resistance to ground. Measure the continuity from the lead tip to the antenna mast. This reading should be the same as the first. The most likely cause is the antenna adaptor being faulty or incorrect. I am assuming the problem wasn't there with the previous radio. You can also clean the main battery to chassis ground at the driver's side of the front bumper. It is usually bad. It is visible through the front of the bumper.

it may also be an active antenna and need to be powered up..... just like the VW's

Now that you mention it kgerry, you are probably correct. There is a grey wire in the large radio plug in cavity B3 that, if there, requires 12 volts to turn on the antenna module while the radio is on.
