First off I'll tell you a little background. I have a Phoenix Gold QX500.1 and a 06 S12L7 running 2ohm mono. Okay heres the dilemna. About a month ago I thought I blew my 04 S12L5. At 31 volume the sub would cutoff. This started happening after one months of hard playing. Well Kicker replaced it with an 05 S12L5 that I sold. And I bought the new L7. Now its doing the same damn thing. So I know its not my speaker. The amp is staying on and not in protect mode. Could it be a ground problem?

What's happening to the voltage at the amplifier input when the amp shuts down? Is your gain set properly? Yes, it could be a ground problem, what's your total ground resistance? Are you certain you don't have any defective RCA or speaker wires? ------------- Support the12volt.com

It worked fine for a month or longer and then started this. I have replaced the speaker wire. I'm going to drop it off at my local shop on Monday and have them check it.

DYohn, More info for you, when the sub stops it stops abruptly!!!!! I mean instantly but the amp power light is still on and then if you leave it at the same volume it (the sub) will come back on after about a second or two!

Sounds like a low-voltage shutdown, or the amp is defective, assuming the ground and input is OK. ------------- Support the12volt.com

Thanks DYohn. Alright another question for you folks. Since I'm starting to think its the amp as well, would you go with a Kicker ZX750.1 or SX650.1 on this S12L7?

I would look at all of the amplifiers available before I decided on just one.

Agreed, and I wouldn't buy Kicker at all, but that's just me. But back to the problem. Have you measured the voltage at the amp when the system shuts down? If you are overloading your alternator, buying a new amp will not solve the problem. ------------- Support the12volt.com

To me this sounds like a bad ground or a bad ground that has been there for awhile and finally may have damaged the amp.

DYohn, I haven't been able to check it yet. Probably next week sometime. I'm starting to lean towards a bad ground as well. At low volumes I can play all day, but as soon as I turn up to volume 31 it cuts out. The system was set to run at a volume of 45 originally. And then this developed, so I iniatially blamed it on the sub. But there have been many times that I have seen good grounds go bad, vibration, corrosion, etc. We'll see. I might start today, I don't know yet.

Rechecked the ground and everything. And then noticed that the amp went into thermal overload. Bye bye amp. I'm not sad though, I bought the amp for $75 about 6 months back. So I feel I got my moneys worth. DYohn and forbidden, just wanted to say thanks for taking the time to chime in and try and help me out.
