I am trying to install the pioneer avic-d1 into a 2004 Ford Escape and I searched on this website and read this topic:

https://www.the12volt.com/installbay/forum_posts.asp?tid=36666&KW=escape+double+din

and some people say to use a kit to fit a double din radio and i was wondering what kit they are talking about and where I can get it or if the other people are correct how exactly do you install it using the backstrap method?

also without using a kit does the installation look clean?

take the 99-5802 radio kit

for more information go to https://www.metraonline.com/ and select your car!

for the plug adaptor it's depend if you have a radio whit 4 or 7 speakers.

I believe 04's were still undersized double-DIN's, so you'll need to modify the dash to make it fit.

Backstrap would be used to support the deck.  On the side of the radio, there will be threaded holes you can use to attach backstrap (with the supplied screws that came with the unit).  Then just screw the other end of the backstrap behind the dash to mount it.

You can attempt to modify a single din kit to fit a double din radio.
