Subject: JL Audio crossover - 3-way speakers

My demo vehicle is nearing completion and I have a question about hooking up the drivers to the JL Audio crossover that came with my XR653-cs 3-way components:

I do not want to hook-up the 6.5" drivers to the crossover, I just want to have the tweeter and 4" midrange hooked-up to the crossover. Will I face a problem by only connecting two drivers to my crossover? How can I avoid the problem, yet not hook-up the 6.5" drivers?

The 6.5" speakers are being connected to the multimedia system on a seperate channel, along with the 8" subs and 12" subs. So in total, I am creating a 4-way system here, as long as there are no problems with only connecting a tweeter and midrange to the crossovers...

All help is greatly appreciated!

-Alex

You're going about this thing wrong, IMO.  If you're setting up a multimedia system and need more speakers, then buy more speakers.  The 3-way component set are designed to run as a set, and without running the 6.5's you'd be losing the frequencies intended for those drivers on those audio channels.

Agreed, wouldn't it also effect the ohm load at the crossover input?

The ohm load is really what I'm concerned about. Yes, it is run off of a "multimedia manager", I suppose I didn't explain this correctly. This 165-band piece of equipment the Alpine PXA-H701 will be used to control the sound, for the most part. I will NOT be creating a 5.1/7.1 setup of any kind. The potential to add speakers sometime down the road to create a surround sound setup is great. However, for now I am just dealing with what I have mentioned.

The tweeter/4" midrange/6.5" driver will all be in the door, within an inch of each other. How would you guys recommend that I setup the channels for all of my speakers?

I basically have a "5-way" system, if you want to look at it that way; there are 10 speakers total. Should I just connect all of the speakers (tweeter, 4" and 6.5") to the crossover and run that on one (1) channel back to the multimedia manager? This will mean that I'll have a total of 3 channels going back to the manager.

Will I gain/lose anything by hooking all of the drivers up to the crossover?

Thanks for the help-

Yes, the impedance will be adversely affected.  I looked into my files and found an example to show.  This is a 3-way system impedance:  impedwithdriver.jpg  The crossover in place here was designed for the 6.5 and 4.5 woofers, and 1" tweeter for a +/-8 ohm nominal impedance.

Now here's what happens if I remove the 6.5 woofer from the system:  impedwithoutdriver.jpg

Build the box so that it performs well in the worst case scenario and, in return, it will reward you at all times.

Oh wow I can see the difference now.... hey thanks for digging up the graphs. My friend and I went ahead to measure the impedance on the crossover before I saw your reply, and in fact, it does change a great deal with one driver missing...

Is there anyway that I can connect a resistor that will equal to the same impedance as the 6.5" driver, yet be able to handle the 40-50watt load? This will trick the crossover into thinking that it has all 3 drivers connected, possible?

I can do that option or simply hook up all 3 drivers to the crossover... I will just have to set that channel to handle a wide range of frequency, in the multimedia manager. The crossover will then take care of splitting up the frequencies from one channel, into the 3 drivers.

I was hoping I would not have to do the 2nd option... Of course I can always get a crossover from JL Audio that is designed for use with their 2-way systems (tweeter and 4" or 6.5") but I can imagine that something like that will be a lot of extra money, and difficult to find online.

Hey check this auction out for a pair of two-way crossovers, I can't believe I found these:

If I use these, will it solve my problem?
