I'm looking to buy some decent wire strippers/cutters that will do large power wire, such as 4 gauge. I had these really cool ones that were shaped kind of like channel locks, and when you squeezed the handles it stripped the wire...I broke 'em on 8 AWG wire, though :(

I just use regular wire strippers- something like this: https://www.smarthome.com/images/89038big.jpg.  Just put the stripping teeth around the wire, gently squeeze, and twist.

Strippers will work harder for you the more you tip them.

But, to strip 4 AWG wire, I use a safety razor blade.

Yup.... first thing I thought of was the brass pole variety as well.......

As far as anything over 10ga, out comes the trusty Olfa knife....

those 'automatic' strippers work really well if you get one that is made solidly. It works for up to 10ga. I believe.

I do electrical/electronic work and we just use a utility knife to cut around the perimiter and then skin the cable lengthwise. Skinning a short length for a terminal end will require no length-wise skinning, it will just pop off.

Auto strippers, WELL worth it & a huge time-saver.  Takes less than 1 sec to strip most wire.

I use a set of heavy gauge cutters. Made by Klein, you can get them at Lowes for like $30. I also have Gardner Bender wire strippers. Picked those up a Lowes too.

I tried all the old school ones, from way long ago, and the automatic plasticy ones like boulder guy talks about. I had a pair break on 12awg for me, and got a set of https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00004WLL0/ref=nosim/103-6490094-2323020?n=228013

those, they kick serious ass, all metal construction, no plastic parts to break, and are rated through 10 awg, but worked on 8 for me. rockford fosgate 8awg power cable is as far as i tried them. highly suggested

For the plastic auto strippers, there are cheapo ones out there that use the same design, tried some off Ebay for $7 or so, broke the second use.  The first set I had lasted about 8 yrs, they're identical to the ones Crutchfield sells.  It seems finding the well-made ones are the key.
