One of my friends who is a girl, recently inherited a 1989 Honda CRX. The car was gutted, no stereo, speakers, nothing left. She has some ancient speakers that were harvested from a 1986 Mercury Sable. I made sure they still worked (tested it in my car) installed them in the door panel, and then set out to install an old JVC KD-S737 that I pulled from my car back in 2002 when I got it. It worked back then, but now when I hook it up to her car, it won't stay turned on. The only signs of life it gives are when I punch the display button (it gives the time 12:00) or when I insert/eject a CD (it reads eject). It responds to no other button presses. I've checked the voltage on the Honda, and its about 18. All fuses are good (one on the deck too) I've triple checked the wiring to make sure I'm wiring it right.

Can a stereo go bad from not being used?

I realize this is a really old radio, but she's a broke college studet, and i'm not generous rnough to give her my old Xplod.. posted_image

18 volts, are you serious? Test the unit outside the car with the red and yellow wires connected together. Touch the red and yellow wires to the positive battery terminal, and the black to the negative. If it turns on okay, you have a wiring problem, otherwise, it's probably a bad unit.
