I am undecided wether to go with 3 x 12" or 4 x 10" subs (all in a sealed box with seperated chambers). Ok let me start by saying that I want something that gonna hit the very low frequencies of rap/bass cds but also hit the mid-low frequencies of old 80s music and light rock. My amp for the subs can push out 600W RMS into 1 Ohms and I am looking at either Kicker Comp or Comp VR - what do you guys recommend or suggest...
BTW, I just installed my old L7 15" Dual 2Ohms this weekend and ran it as 1Ohm. It sounds great with music that has very low bass - but otherwise if I put in some old school 80s CDs it just does not sound right.
Yeah you're on the right track - I mentioned a sealed enclosure because I have had better luck with them. Sub price range? Well, I am looking for something on the cheap side like the Hifonics ZS12, Kicker Comp or Comp VR - something along those lines.
Well funny thing is today I did not turn the system on and drove around for about 45 mins - then when I turned it on it sounded so much better than it did yesterday. Maybe its my battery going out or something because I changed the alternator a few months ago with a 160A...
I like the low frequency response of my L7 15 because its so clean on that part but its a shame I can't get the midbass response out of it because some of the music I listen to just sounds "empty" - its almost like only my mids and highs are playing!
What made me think about switching to 12s or 10s??? Well, I have two of those Hifonics ZS12 in my other car and the frequency response is just about perfect for ANY kind of music even bass CDs. I wish I could get that in my suv...
Well since I might have power problems now, I am just gonna wait until I see what's going on with that before I change anything. BTW, the L7 I have has been into storage for almost a year if not more- do you think that has something to do with things??? I just installed it yesterday...
I know this doesn't totally fit in with your plans, but I think you may find the results to be pleasing...
I would suggest something like 2 12"
Infinity Kappa Perfect 12.1d's put into a good vented enclosure (Infinity recommends 1.75 ft^3 per sub tuned to about 36hz).
Those Comp VR's will be loud, but still not much in the SQ department.
Yeah thats what I was thinking more of too - 3 x 12" - But I am gonna hold off with this changeover and keep the 15" L7 in there until I get my battery changed. I think my battery is going in my suv and its causing problems as to why the bass does not sound good sometimes and I think it might be fooling me into thinking there is something wrong with the bass set up.
I say this because today I did not turn the system on for half the day and then in the evening I turned it on and it sounded insane - then it just slowly lost its bass (bass started to sound shallow) - all this happend while I was driving. Then I noticed the interior lights started dimming too. I think my battery is not holding the charge for it - it needs replacing anyway, sometimes I barely get it to start up. Going with Optima Yellow...
