do the rear seat controls in vans and suvs work the same way as steering wheel controls. if yes does that mean i can buy an adpater for the steering controls and have it hooked up to the rear controls instead?

No they don't work the same. Different manufacturers use different designs for their rear seat radio controls. Most incorporate data between the radio and the rear control. i don't believe anyone makes an adaptor to retain the rear seat controls, once you have replaced the factory radio. Buy a radio with a remote control and substitute it.
