i have two alpine type r 12s the 4 ohm versions with a rockford fosgate p8002 amp that is bridged.  i was wondering where i should set the crossover at.  is it the higher the better or is there a science to it??

Set your low pass filter at about 80Hz as a starting point, and then you can adjust up a bit from there.  The science is that sounds below 80Hz are not directional (meaning the subwoofer can be anywhere and it will not sound strange) and you want the subwoofer low-pass to be set to the same frequency as your front main stage high-pass (if you are using one.)  One other question: the Rockford P8002 is a 2-channel class AB amp and can support no lower than a 4-ohm load when bridged.  I assume your woofers are DVC and you have the pair wired for a net 4-ohm load?
