im not asking how to do it, because i have come across more than enough information on this site as to how to wire this up. I am just wondering why people do this, and what benifits this gives?

check out bcae1.com. Look through the series/parallel basics page in the menu on the right side. There is more info there than you'll ever need to know.

Here's a great tech paper on everything you wanted to know about dual voice coil subs, and much you didn't know that you wanted to you.  You know? posted_image

Two possible reasons are:  a change in the number of subs, and a change in the type of amplifier (one channel or two channel).  Another could be:  switching an everyday system for use in a competition, such as running at 4 ohms for everyday listening and changing to 1 ohm for a comp.  wiring
