I installed an after market sony cd player in a 97 Pontiac grand am Gt  that already had the wiring cut.  I installed it with some difficulty and it now works fine except that the dash lights are now inoperative.  All other lights/systems work. The fuses are all ok.  Iinitially had a wire wrong and the parking lights also did not work but I fixed that.  Is there sone fusable link I have blown or wire that I failed to connect?

you might want check and see if your tail lights come on, if not replace it's fuse and that may fix your problem

you may want to remove the radio and check for a pinched or shorted wire... i suspect you'll still find it's a blown fuse right now, but if you replace it and it blows again right away, remove the HU and try to source the actual cause of the problem....

The head unit is out, no wires connected, the fuses all are good and still no dash lights.  I think I zapped something.

Look for a shorted out wire in your cars stereo harness, factory stereos use an illumination wire (commonly an orange wire) to supply power to the lights in it.  Aftermarket stereos draw this power directly from the acc wire, so you're left with an unused wire behind your deck.  The illumination wire is tied into the same circuit as your dash lights and usually your tail lights, if it shorts out you could either blow a fuse, or melt your cars wire harness.  This happened to me, the illumination wire grounded itself and the first symptom was no dash lights but eventually fried my ecu.

You could also have fried the dimmer switch when you first hooked it all up.

I had this same problem in my 89 cefiro, first everytime I turned the light on the stereo went off, then I fixed that and I had no dash lights or tail lights. In the end i put in a bigger fuse, and had to run a new ground wire. As when the lights were on it was not grounding properly, I checked this with dmm and got it sorted

You shouldn't replace a factory fuse with one of a higher rating- find the problem and fix that.
