I am gonna get one 12" sub to run off a rockford fosgate p5002 amp.  What sub in your opinion is better the alpine type r or rockford fosgate p3?  I want good spl but also want decent sound quality.

That's a hard choice.  I sell both at my shop.  The Alpine sounds cleaner in my opinion, but that Rockford amp was designed with the P3 in mind.  Both have a great amount of volume output.  If you can, see your local dealer to compare the two (side by side if you can).

Good Luck!

I would actually go with the p3. It is a little sloppier but way more power in my opinion. I haven't been all that happy with the new type r.
