which would bump louder in a ported box....A mtx 4500 15 in or a 15 in phoenix gold octane R...Im going to build both boxes to specs. So i was just wondering which one i should go with. The octane r is rated at 800 watts while the mtx is rated at only 500.

"to spec"  means.... vented, sealed, 4th order bandpass, 6th order bandpass... transmission line, etc.  Please let everyone know

In a ported box, vented whatever you wanna call it...By spec i was saying like the specifications mtx and phoenix gold calls for. Like internal volume, port size, so on

the mtx 15" thunder 4500 is 250watt rms, you have to look at the watt rms rating not the max power.

well it depends on which one a stick with ... if i stay with the mtx i will keep this rockford i got. but if i go to the pg. i might get a different amp since the rockford would be too small

Well the pg sub handles 400 watts rms, and the mtx one handles 250, the sensitivity on the pg is 91 db and 89 on the mtx...  So judging by that alone it looks like that pg sub will be louder.  But then again PG might have rated their sensitivity the 2.83v method in which case the mtx will be about the same loudness as the PG.  The PG has a longer linear excursion by at least 10mm, but it also has a higher fs, of 27hz compared to the mtx's 22hz.     Now comes the big decision maker...  the mtx sub only requires 2.6 cubes to sound good, the PG requies about 5 cubic foot.... that is huge.  I wouldn't be basing my decision strictly on which would be louder, because there are a lot of other factors that play into this.  I think for my tastes I would go with the mtx sub.  It would theoretically hit lower, and do it in a smaller enclosure and they are both 15's and have quite a bit of surface area so they will both be pretty loud.

I dont have any experience with PG subs, but i know there amps ratings are almost RIGHT on.  there all CEA certified and I am assuming there subs would be rated properly as well.

thats 5cu feet for a music' playing box..i was looking into their spl spec box and it only has 3 cubic feet...so thats what i would prolly go and build, would this have any downsides in the way the bass hits or the quality it plays?...thanks for all the replies so far
