Hi!,

I have already done a search on red top optima posts in this forum and I believe I did not really find my answer. I have a 1965 Ford Mustang and I am going to be running a 1989 5.0L V8, and a red top optima battery. The guy that sold me the battery said I cannot do three things because of the optima red top battery:
1.) I cannot receive or give a boost to someone else with a dead battery.
2.) I cannot run aftermarket underdrive pulleys.
3.) I cannot run an high output alternator with the optima red top.

Is any of this true?

Not that I can see.  I've given many jump starts with my Optima batteries.  And I can't see how the higher output alternator or smaller pulley would effect the battery in any way becides charging it a little faster.  Was he trying to sell you a more expensive battery of something?

From the Optima website...

"7. Will my high-output alternator damage the OPTIMA?

No, as long as the voltage is properly regulated. Because the OPTIMA has a very low internal resistance it will accept high current more efficiently than conventional batteries."

They don't address the underdrive pulleys or jump starting, but I'm sure neither would be a problem just like Stephen Kephart said.

I'd stay away from underdrive pulleys because they spin the alternator more slowly.
