Adding a hard wired FM mod to this car, Metra's catalog says a 40- VL30 adaptor but it looks like the antenna connects to the amp under the passenger front seat. Anybody done one of these yet? Metra's adaptor is not the right one.

The antenna is actually mounted in the roof at the back of the vehicle.  If you open the rear hatch you'll see a plastic piece, pop out the two square covers, and remove the torx screws then pull down and remove it.  I've never actually tried to interface with the antenna lead, I've always used an wireless one and mounted it back there, and works great, no static.

Unless something has changed, you won't be able to use those antenna adapters on that vehicle. Last I remember, there is no way to interface with the antenna on that vehicle, wireless only.

yea you can interface them but it is kinda of a pain to do it. the location described above is accurate and the antenna is some kind of membrane antenna rather than a regular antenna end. if you get to the wiring for the antenna you can strip back the coaxial portion of the antenna and solder into the center filament and then insulate your connection. i would suggest getting an antenna adapter and cut into that rather than the FM modulator on your unit. hope that helps and good.

sorry about the above post. you will also need to solder to the outside jacket of the volvo antenna. i thought that was kind of understood but i would hate for someone to get all of this vehicle put back together and realize it didn't work. so solder both the center filament and outside insulation to the aftermarket FM modulator and insulate everything. again good luck and hope that helps.

If you don't want to strip into the factory antenna, you can just strip back a few inches from the modulator and tape the center conductor to the outside of it.  You'll get some static this way, but if you're leary of cutting into the antenna- it works.
