Hi,
my name is andy I'm getting a 1998 Chevy Blazer...

This is what I want to add to it:
-15" Flip Down LCD
-7" Flip Up LCD DVD/CD Player
-Rear View Camera
-2 x 12" Subs
-KeylessEntry/RemoteStart system
-Alarm System
-Underbody lights
-Bull guard + 2x PIAA lights

I was wondering what you guys think about power sources. Do you think I need a high power alternator or a second battery? Thanks a lot for the help
Sincerely
Andy Alt

Try to be as descriptive as possible when posting.  You gave us the year/make/model number of the vehicle- that was good.  If you can give us information about the rest, it can allow us to better work with you.  Even if you don't have model numbers, if you can post some specs, that can sometimes be just as helpful.  One piece of equipment that will probably use the most power is one you didn't mention- your amplifier.  With the equipment you have described, I foresee no problem with the stock alternator, but depending on your amp (and maybe something else specific to your other equipment), you may need an upgrade.

A good way to figure max system draw is to add up the fuse ratings of all your equipment.  Now, lookup your factory alternator output.  Then consider you also need enough to run your vehicles other accessories (maybe another 25-40 amps or so).

Not knowing what all your are going to run I'll just say yes you do need a high output alt. It's a SUV you are going to run all the factory stuff like a/c elec seats, headlight's, powerwindows. Plus underbody lights, tv's, amp for subs, keyless, and who knows what else in the future. Going off road? maybe a wench in the future who knows. The extra power is worth ever penny. In fact if you will search this site for ho alts and the BIG 3 read it and the truth shall set you free.

Hey, I too own a blazer, I have about 60 amps of stereo power. no offroad lights or anything, but I do know that offroading lights take ALOT of power, and as speedway said, Winches especially can take up to almost a hundred just by themselves. I believe 98 blazers with the vortec block have a 100 amp alternator stock. I would suggest looking into a HO alt. I am glad that is what you are looking into and not asking if you should buy a 50 farad cap though. definatly get more info on what you are getting. If the 2 12"s you talk about are only JL w0s or something else small, you may not need a HO alt. But I am assuming your going big on this one. You will probably need a HO alt.

I run a 600watt Kenwood Amp on 2x12"-Punch woofers.
Since I haven't bought the rest I can't really give you guys more accurate specs.

How much does a high-power alternator cost in average? is it worth it? do you think I would wreck the stock alternator?

thanks for your help. I'm sorry if I'm not accurate enough, but I'm trying to be as much as possible.

$250 to $350 depending on where you buy. yes it is worth it. I could not live with out mine. Would you "wreck the stock alternator"? Well that depends on your defintion of wreck. Over load will cause premature failure, but to me the worst part is poor performance of the elc system. Just think about it. You are driving down the road, it's raining so you have your lights on , your wipers on, your a/c on, tv's on subs booming. that a big load.  Read the stickies above. Big 3 and all the others they will anwser your questions. good luck on your project.

Yes, it's time to upgrade the big 3 and alt now before you install your equipment.  I'd go for an alt rated at 150 amps (hot rated) or more.  Good luck.
