That is not a software issue at all. Three things must happen for this to work.

1: The phone must first be capable of charging THRUOUGH the USB cable (actually the phone's data port must support this function).
2: Your cable must have the appropriate wiring within it (i.e. it has to be a charge/data cable).
3: THEN your USB port on the host PC must have enough current to charge the battery without shutting off due to a sensed overcurrent condition. The USB standard is 500mA maximum, so your phone's charging circuit (if present) must not pull more current than this.

Software has nothing to do with it... posted_image What kind of phone do you have, and I'll see what I can find out. I use a DataPilot product. Phone search here. Home page here. Hope this'll help! As far as the phone, it still MUST support battery charging through the dataport, otherwise these cables will do you no good.

Motorola have that feature, my sister just bought an motorola, i don't remember the model right now, it have the USB wire and and the software, the software is for transfer pic, music and that kind of stuff from your pc to your cell, and it also have the feature that when you connect the USB wire to your cell you'll able to make phone call from your pc using your cell number it's very great, and yes you can also charge it with the USB wire from your Pc. so it is true, when my sis come back home, i will post the model of my sis cell.

Did a little more research... The newest LG phones (mine's an LG 9800, my wife's is a 5200) do support the data/charge function. (I actually had to research this, as I do not actually HAVE the cable for this phone yet... due in tomorrow...) I was hoping it would... The above links to DataPort provide their own software with the cable. eBay has MANY data cables available for perusing... If you are familiar with eBay, you know you need to be wary of some sellers. My only recommendation is be certain they offer a return policy, and be mindful of their feedback reading.

It seems that if you have one of the newer (at least US release - not necessarily all of the North American releases) LG phones, they do, indeed support data transfer and charging though the USB cable...

The software I recommend (and have used, but not with this phone yet) is called BitPIM, and can be gotten free here. The data cable will NOT be provided, but I used this software for my older 4400, and it worked really well for at least the functions supported by the phone. It is free, so it is officially unsupported, but the community does have forums for support. I have personally never looked for the support forums, I have only heard they are out there... a bit of research on your part will probably locate exactly what you are searching for!

Doesn't look like it's gonna be a data/charge cable... Sorry, man! Every accessory kit I looked up seemed to offer a separate charger WITH the USB data cable... Even the DataPilot site didn't mention specifically it was the same cable...
