Strange Amp Problem

Hello, I recently purchased an amp and I am having a strange issue with it that you guys can probably help me on. The amp worked fine until a wire was frayed and a fuse (inline) was blown. The car was rewired and when hooked back up the amp did not power on. So I tested the terminals with a multimeter to find that the 12v constant wire was reading around 13v and the remote wire was reading 12v when the car was on. However, when the remote wire was hot, the voltage of the remote wire and the constant wire dropped to around 6v. No lights came on in the amp. To test the amp, I piggybacked a wire from the 12v constant to the remote (bypassing the decks remote) to see if it would power on. It did the same thing again. So basically what is happening is that when the amp is told to turn on, the voltage drops to 6v on the remote terminal and the 12v constant.


Does anyone have any idea of what could be causing this?

If your ground checks out okay, your amp is probably toast.  I'd try another.

I agree, double check the ground first. Disconnect all wires from the amp and check the voltages again. If the voltages are dropping with no load, then the problem is the cd player or the remote on line dead shorting. If the voltages are fine, then the issue is with the amp. It really does sound like the power supply in the amp has been dead shorted. This leads to the magic smoke that makes it work escaping, so stop now before more damage is done.
