well i had decided on getting a 12" type r but i was looking on parts express and found a peerless passive radiator. it has an xmax of 24 mm compared to the 18.2 mm xmax of the type r. how would they compare as far as output, power handling (never found an rms for it), and is it more geared toward SQ or what? here is the peerless driver...

ok, i think i am a little confused on what exactly a passive radiator is. i thought it was more or less a shallow subwoofer but from what i have read it acts like a port. you dont hook up any amplifier power up to it or anything. i read this on diysubwoofers.com but it is kinda hard to understand. can anyone explain this in lamens (sp?) terms for me..?

A passive radiator (aka a "drone cone") behaves similarly to a port. They can usually be tuned (in an equivalent enclosure) to a lower Fs. A PR system will behave mostly the same as would a vented enclosure:
1) Subsonic filer highly recommended
2) STEEP low pass crossover
3) Lower XO point than a sealed enclosure. (IMO a true subwoofer, not a detached woofer)
4) They will "unload" below Fs, causing flapping and possible damage to the woofer
5) Can be exceptionally difficult to tune.
6) Incorrect tuning will sound like @$$
7) The PR can be weighted for a lower FS, but at the expense of efficiency and enclosure size...
If you have never built ANY subwoofers, don't try it as your first project. If done right, the results are VERY satisfying, but if done wrong, you can end up with a pile of expensive parts... Get your feet wet on sealed and ported enclosures first.

bobby_7, you do realize a passive radiator is not a speaker? The Peerless XLS and XXls subwoofers are getting great raves from some quarter, although the pink you gave to Parts Express is not for the subwoofer.
