I have four 12" Kicker L5's and a Rockford Fosgate T10001BD that came with the '94 Explorer that I just bought.

Only 2 of the L5's were connected to the amp (1 to each channe) when I bought the car (yesterday) and I want your opinions on the best way to wire all 4 to the amp. Or, perhaps I shouldn't try to wire all for 12's to my single amp.

Your thoughts?

You need to give more information.  Are they dual voice coils?  2 or 4 ohms each?  After we know this we can tell you how best to wire them up.

That amp is also only one channel.

Yes I know the amp is only one channel.  I should have been more specific, I was talking about the subs.  I think those L5's are usually dual voice coil but I'm not sure.  Anyway you have to know what models they are before you can figure out the proper wiring configuration that is the best (and safe for the amp) to run them at.  So you need to find out if the subs are DVC or SVC and what impedance each voice coil is.

The impression I get from Kicker.com is that all L5's are DVC. I will have to take them out of their boxes to find out the impedence of the coils; I will let you know as soon as I do. As far as the amp being only 1 channel... I am confused. It clearly has connections for 2 speakers. Please see these pictures that I took with my phone.

A lot of mono amps have connections for two speakers to make it easier when hooking up multiple speakers.

For example you could put a 2ohm sub on each output and the amp would see it as 1ohm.

Ah, I see. That would explain why it says "speaker a" and "speaker b" instead of "left" and "right".

For you to get the full 1000watts @1ohm out of that amp for all four subs they each need to be dual 2ohm.

If that is what they turn out to be (whuch I am assuming they will) then you just use option #2 here for "Speaker A" and "Speaker B."

https://www.crutchfieldadvisor.com/learningcenter/car/subwoofers_wiring.html?subs=2&impedance=DVC2x2

I would check all four subs though just to be sure.

Umm...sorry luckeydevel but if all four subs were dual 2 ohm than lowest the amp would see would either 2 ohms with a parallel/series or .5 ohms all in parallel.

Just hope that the subs are all dual 4 ohms. Wired all in parallel you would get a final load of 1 ohm = full output of amp.

No aznboi3644, you are the one that's wrong.  Luckydevil was correct to say that four dvc 2ohm woofers wired with the voice coils in series and then the subs in parallel to the amp would result in 1 ohm.  You could do the same with dual 4ohm voice coil but end up with a 2 ohm load.   That link will show the correct way to wire the 4 subs to get the 1 ohm load.  A 4 ohm load is also possible with all four subs but they will be way underpowered.

Ok guys, I took them out of their box and they are all dual 2ohm coils. So my understanding from those diagrams and what you guys said and that handy Ohm calculator is that if all the coils on each speaker are wired in series and then all 4 speakers are wired parrallel to the single channel on the amp I will have a 1ohm load on an amp that is 1ohm stable. Therefore safely maximizing the power of my amp. Is that correct? Safe being the key word because I can not afford to blow and replace any of my equipment.

hustlin247, sounds right. Just do it like the picture shows...

Double check the ground and power wire sizes also. That amp is gonna be drawing some serious power at 1000watts rms.

Ah my bad...in my head i was thinking four 4 ohm voice coils.

Sorry guys my mistake

Hmm... now you've got me thinking. My t10001bd has a 150amp fuse in it. If I run the 4 subs at 1 ohm and use the full 1k RMS watts do I run the risk of damaging my stock alternator? Is that something I should worry about?

I really appreciate all the help. Any of you installers in the Seattle area?

I would read the post about upgrading the big 3, if you plan on doing this.

Build the box so that it performs well in the worst case scenario and, in return, it will reward you at all times.
