Hi I have recently written off my car and had to remove the gear inside.

What I was wondering is, is it possible for a low price to use a transformer to connect to the head unit and amp to create a nice little system.

I have a JBL gto75.4 4-channel amp 520watts max.

And a Sony CDX-4180-R head unit, 4*40W.

What I'm wondering is how much current will be drawn and what transformer would be required.

Please help me out people

What you need is an invertor. Depending on how loud you want to play it I would guess you will need 15 to 30 amps continuous power. A company called Ashton makes some pretty clean invertors. Expect to pay around $200. Sorry about the car.

tcss, I think you mean Astron. I use an Astron RS-70A  to run the system in my garage. You can find Astron power supplies here: https://www.astroncorp.com/linear.shtml

Volt, you are correct  Astron. Monday morning, lots of cobwebs, spent the weekend at Laguna Seca, beer.

or u could buy a 12v lawn mower battery from a part store and a 5 amp inverter from a radioshack and use the inverter to keep the battery charged and the battery to supply the amps

Actually, you need a power supply. An invertor convers from DC to AC, you need to go the other way around. Tripp-Lite makes some very good ones. I use a 40A version on my bench for testing and servicing all kinds of electronics gear. They are not cheap, at all, (the 40A cost me, I think, 175.00) but they are VERY clean DC, and really do provide the current they specify. You CAN, if desired, add a small battery, like a MC battery, in parallel with the power supply for a better filtering, and peak current capacity, power system.

A 40A model should provide you with plenty of power for the items you have. Based on your max power specs above, I come up with 670 watts, and 670 watts divided by 14.4 volts, equals 46A. A little higher than you PS will supply continuously, but: 1, you wont be using it all, all the time, and 2, 46A is based on MAX numbers... 50 to 75% of that for real-world continuous numbers... Even allowing for efficiency, 40A oughta do what you need.

It all reminds me of something that Molière once said to Guy de Maupassant at a café in Vienna: "That's nice. You should write it down."

I have found a transformer which is at the right voltage but is only 10A continuous, i need at least a 25A which the head unit speakers removed. dont i?

I was thinking, would it be possible to use an atx power supply, I.E. 550watt one and just use the 12vdc connector.

Of course i would have to figire out how to switch it on withouit a motherboard.

its because some of these a rated for up to like 25amp.

i know i should really be using 40a but i will remove components to get it to work.

Thats what i posted in that thread. the way to switch it on without a motherboard attached is by shorting out pin's 4 and 6. they are the green and black one.. any black wire in combo with the green will work.

also you can use something we use in the Tech Shop @ Work called a ATX PSU Tester. basically shorts it out for you without having loose wires.

Good Luck

Also my 1200.1 JBL amp was powered off a CHEAP 350W PSU.

but again *IT IS NOT ELECTRICALLY SAFE*
