You can't say for sure what point Db wise. But the way to break the glass besides a hard sharp object,is to find the resonant frequency of the piece of glass (ie: the windshield) and blast the hell out of it..

I'd really like to know if anyone has info concerning this. I'm kinda tired of local people coming in and saying people have blown out their windows and such. I really doubt there's that many people with the money, time, talent, and investment into it to successfully pull this off.

Just my 2 cents but glass is a very difficult thing to put any specific failure point on.  In my materials class at college we were doing destructive testing on a variety of materials; plastics, metals, and glass.  Metals, and plastics for the most part, fail in a predictable manner.  On the other hand glass definately does not.  Glass is predicted to fail in a statistical manner, that is an average can be determined.  Often times failure can occur far from the average on both sides.  So my guess is that it is possible for people to blow their windows out but it is just isolated incidences.  Like mentioned above the resonant frequency of the glass would adversely affect this though.

Oh yeah, mythbusters is such a cool show, I hope they do have that episode to put this question to rest.posted_image

We have some videos on our site of 150.6 with no one on the glass and yes, it will flex like mad.   they are also on realm of excursion under the competiton pages.

Typically you will not shatter glass untill aproaching the 165db range, the only other was is like said if a sharp object hits or rattles aginst it.

Yes Mythbusters was at Spring Bash, A DB drag show.   It is supposed to air late this season sometime, if I get more info I will let ytou all know.   But I will say this, no one shattered thier window.

I do have a video of the riley's shattering thier window at over 170db, I will have to post it later today so you all can see it.

I have not seen a window shatter from spl yet. I have a few customers that claim it blew out every window in the vehicle and they lived to tell about 100% usda b.s. I have seen windows flexing which is pretty cool. I would be intrested in seeing a window shatter though, so if anybody has pic or clips post'em up.

sugarbailey, is my girlfriend......I might have some vids of when the window spidered during some testing runs after finals.

we had small chip in the window before USACi finals, after finals it was cracked across the windshiled.

one nice winter day I decided to crank it up on the road, and that was a mistake..it spidered all the way across.

OUr civic has factory glass all around and it has flexed like crazy but not given out at over 153db

A good freind of mine had 4, 12" JL's in his chevy s10, and pulling out of a gas station, he turned it up and shattered his back winsheild.. later that month he fixed his window and went to an audio comp and hit at 198, but when the windsheild broke, he was only three quaters.. so maybe 170??

198 mega-zillion-SPL's baybeee!

The most I ever saw happen was a guy pop the rear window out of his Beetle, which slid down the back and shattered on the concrete.  149.9db exceeded the pressure rating of the OEM window gasket, apparently.

Before anyone else lashes out at you, you might want to rethink of posting this sort of stuff. To my knowledge (and I don't do comps and generally don't care about the numbers), there is no one in the world who has legitimately done anything of that magnitude. Be honest when you post, and you'll get more help and responses. If you're dishonest...well, don't be surprised if you get ignored. posted_image

The current legal recorded world record and loudest noise metered on the B and K meter is 180.5 db...done by scott owens with pioneer products.

Cant remember off the top of my head but something like 16 subs 64 amps

the crazy part is that they have another vehicle with 2 12' subs doing 176.1!     that is truly crazy in my thoughts...and its all in a scion xb.

I will have to fin dsome links and pictures from USACi finals last year to post.

Makes our 153 look tiny haha

Maybe next month we can get that a little louder on 2 subs.

i just clicked on this link becuse i thought it would be intresting and 198 db's is the funniest thing i have ever heard in my life becuse like jeffchilcott said that loudest car in the world only hits 180.5 and you wouldnt even be able to sit inside that car becuse it is so loud. so for your friend to pull out of a gas station doin 198 and be driving a car is just a lie. people who do 170+ dont even have their hu's inside that car becsue it wont work. i dont kno how many people here have ever heard a car that does 150 db's but if you have sat inside one doing 150+ you know that it is loud as hell, so to sit inside a car doing 198 and driving is just rediculus.

That is excatly why I love having a Term-lab at my disposal now....I didnt have one when I was trying to startup a shop, but have one now that I run in so many shows per year, haha

But we love to find the Big mouths around town and invite them to a little testing session.     I am still a little weary about having alot of people in my new garage.....but the alarm would wake the neighbors 2 blocks away.

Im hoping to get something to work out in a mini-truck we are working on by the end of next weekend, going to try to get it to the same level as the civic 153db.   I would like more but after 2 failed attempts of getting there its time to go back to the drawing board with an empty template

I have my own personal goals set for the year, and I will only know once I get all the equipment built right and in the car, and the car is running! My plans are over the 160db barriar with less then 1000 watts of 4 ohm rated power   :-)    160.0 was first place last year so I have to bring more then that to USACi finals this year!

I might be mistaken, but didn't Alma Gates blow out the rear glass in the Beast when she was with Kicker?

-------------
BOOSH!!

Posted By: Ravendarat
Date Posted: May 21, 2006 at 10:53 PM
She did at a comp, down in florida I think. I know I heard from more than one person, including the kicker rep, that it was a staged blowout though. The way I heard it, and this is completly second hand info so it could be complete BS, is that Alma was paid by kicker to set up the glass to blow out as the event had a lot of people attend that werent nessasarily competitiors but people who were just kinda walking by and were drawn in. If I remember right I think the comp was on the strip by the beach but I could be wrong, this is 5 years ago now. Anyways they, meaning kicker, figured that some people might remember who won but a lot more people would remeber the vehicle that had a stereo so big it blew out its windows, hence the reason for the spectacle. Like I said, this is all rumor but if it was true than I cant diasagree with the logic involved.

it was a semi staged event.    the lexan was taken out of the frame and normal glass was put back in...it was going to bolw out with out a doubt.

normally around 165db is where the windows in anything will go...but I know of an old S-10 that has been to the 165db mark and kept the factory glass intact!

I know of 3 CRX's that have been over the 160db ,mark and the factory glass has made it a few months but they will typically go out

the bigest reason why glass does crack or shatter is becuse there is a chip or crack forming in the glass already. a brand new windsheild would be very hard to shatter even at 165db, but that is at the point were it happends. also if it is cold likein the winter you can crack your glass.

very simple, go to a sanctioned event by USACi or DB drag. or go to a shop that has a term-lab or audiocontrol 190 meter on hand!   call local shops someone might have one.....or if you tell me where you are located I could refer you to a shop or shows in your area

I know in texas there are lots and lots of events for USACi

check here for some of your local shows around you

the texas heatwave shows have tons and tons of minit trucks and lowriders
