So on another forum this guy is saying some of the best speakers are sold on Madisound.com, made by Vifa, Seas, CDT and some others. He's talking car audio and I was looking around the site and the stuff is priced real cheap. Most of it looks like home audio stuff so I'm confused. maybe I'm missing something, but if someone could shed some light on this, it would be great.

I sell MTX, Xtant & Pioneer and I think these companies sell the best speakers . It's a matter of opinion and what your selling at the time in your shop or online store. Of course your going to tell people that the product that you have in your store is the best because you want to sell it and also you probably truely believe that it's better than the guy's stuff down the street. ------------- Jeff

If you're asking about "home audio" versus "car audio" speakers, there is no such thing. A speaker is a speaker is a speaker. Granted, most "home audio" speakers are rated at higher impedances, but even that line is beginning to fade to black.
I personally use Morel MW-162 woofers in my doors. You might consider those "home audio" because they are 8 ohm woofers, and who in their right mind would waste half the amplifier power they paid for, right? Well, that'd be me.
Higher impedance loads translate to better efficiency, less wasted heat, better damping, and lower distortion. Read this and it'll explain a little better.
But to answer your question... (if this is, indeed, an answer to your question - I couldn't figure what your actual question was ) there is NO difference between home and car speakers, they are ABSOLUTELY interchangeable. (As long as the available amplification is capable of driving the load...) ------------- It all reminds me of something that Molière once said to Guy de Maupassant at a café in Vienna: "That's nice. You should write it down."

The best speaker is the one that is right for the job, one that you like the sound of, one that fits in your price range and one that you will keep. I sell basic ones because my competition down the street does as well, therefor they must be the best. It totally depends on the customer.

Back to the original question, yes companies like Madisound or Parts Express or Speaker City or Solen or many others can be a great way to purchase high-end loudspeakers. Many of the brands they sell like Scan Speak or Vifa (the same company actually, along with Peerless) or HiVi or Morel or Seas or Audax or Bravox etc. are the actual manufacturers for most speaker brands you can buy. Most major "name brands" have their speakers built for them by these companies or others like them. The ones they sell under their own names are similar to but always different from the ones they sell to the big-name retail brands. If you know what you're doing buying from companies like Madisound can be a way to get very high-end stuff at bargain pricing. ------------- Support the12volt.com

Ok tht last response cleared it up. I always thought you weren't supposed to use home speakers because they weren't built as tough for the elemenst like car speakers. I know what's "best" is up to the listener, but usually the higher end stuff is going to sound better than some cheap stuff. And the prices were so low I just wasn't sure if they really were higher end, because of the price. ------------- 2 Diamond Audio D3 12s

Keep your eye on the bargain speaker department at Madisound. I'm using some Vifa mids in my home HT system that were originally made for JBL, and got them at $6 each. For 4" drivers they have an Fs of 65 Hz and are constructed with the same materials as car audio speakers. They're 6 ohm and would be a good choice to use in a car front soundstage application where room is limited. But when you see the really good bargains they sell out quick. Parts Express used to have more of the Vifa buyouts but now Madisound is sole source of the brand since the company Vifa was bought. Some are still a good bargain even at higher prices. I just picked up six Vifa premium line mids for $21 each that sold new for nearly double that. I consider that a reasonable bargain. Most of the cones are polypropylene with rubber surrounds now, or if paper, at least treated with a protectant. These are all good for the harsher car audio environment. lf you're building your own passive crossover for a set of speakers you select and put together, it doesn't matter what their impedance is. You design the crossover for their individual characteristics. Here's a current buyout that could work very well mated with a tweeter for a nice front soundstage. It could be mated, for example, with this tweeter and crossed at 3000 to 3500 Hz. Could be a very nice car audio application. Sometimes it's very well worth experimenting. ------------- Build the box so that it performs well in the worst case scenario and, in return, it will reward you at all times.

Alright cool, thanks for the responses. For the car I have right now, Chevy Beretta, the best thing to do is 6.5 components and make them fit in the kickpanels. Replace the 4X6 plates up front. I'll look around the site and see what I can come up with.

Id say to try to get a demo of every speaker I could....cuz opinions are worthless because its YOUR ears not mine.....try to hear every speaker you can and listen to clarity, response, and distortion...and then pick the ones that best suit YOU.GL sS
