Subject: Carpet under sub airtight?

I'm working on a new box and I was wondering if it matters whether or not there is carpet under the subwoofer lip when it is mounted.
I am thinking that the carpet may actually help to get an airtight seal, but then again bare wood is flat and could possibly give a better seal with a thin foam gasket.
I know this is pretty trivial, but I'm curious if one method is better or preferred over the other.
Thanks guys.

I've never seen a box that mounted the drivers to bare wood.

Carpet under the subwoofer mounting flange? No, carpet is not a good idea as it is definitely not air-tight. Use foam weather strip, silicone sealant or caulk, or some of the special rubberized speaker mounting gaskets. ------------- Support the12volt.com

So should you cut out some of the carpet so that the woofer mounts directly to wood?

yes
I've used some weird removable weatherstripping for my previous subs (subs w/ rubber gaskets rock!!), it's a roll of 6-8 beads of weatherstripping. Wrap that around the sub, screw it in, let the excess seal squeeze out, then just peel it away.
good luck

To be honost I haven't had any problems with air leakage through the area around the sub. Theoretically you should cut away the carpet and use some type of sealant but if its a ported box its most likely not going to be a problem.
