i am going to be installing a 1600 watt 2 channel amp in a 2001 ford focus, will i need a compacitor?

no, you need a high-output alternator.

Read the "How to upgrade the big 3" sticky on the forum. Do that first. Then upgrade the alternator. Forget the cap.

ahhhh caps. i always explain them to my customers as a bandaid on a bullet wound not gonna fix much.

The wire for the big three shouldn't cost and arm and a leg. But it depends on how big and what brand alternator you want to go with.
