I know on the newer ones there are these rubber nipple things you can cut and run wire through. Not sure about the one you are asking though. Someone will probably chime in on here, but you also might want to search vwvortex.com.

find a empty grommet or find the harness that goes through the firewall and pop a small hole w/ a grommet tool and feed the wire through. If you have to drill, drill though the clutch plate (automatic) if no....get a buddy to tap on one side till you find a spot where you have clearance and use a drill bit as a marker...then a step bit (unibit) untill the hole is to size.

Good Luck

Yea, what stylez said, and if you decide to do another area, make sure you are not close to a location where the cable will get too hot from engine heat, like near the header or exhaust pipe.  Not sure how far bar the engines are to the firewall for that model and year.

I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work.

When you do not know what you are doing and what you are doing is the best -- that is inspiration.
