gain on amp, bass on head unit?

is it best to set gain on an amp half way up and adjust the bass on the headunit to get more bass or should i set my gain higher and lower the bass on my head unit???

you should read the gain sticky at the top of this fourm. the ways you discribed is no where near how you set the gain
